"Turns out not where but who your with that really matters"

An interesting question was briefly mentioned in our small group tonight. Do Americans really have opportunity? Basically, the question is, how much of our life is determined when we are born? Are we trapped at birth into a certain set of pre-determined circumstances that will determine the course of our lives.

I think we are to a certain degree. However, I also think we can rise above or fall below the opportunities that are given to us at birth. My dad became a doctor when his father's best steady job was a janitor. He wanted to have a good job so he decided to go for it. If you're born and raised in the ghetto are you destined to live impoverished? I don't really think so. Sure the cards are stacked one way or another when you're born, but I still think the opportunity is there to take your life and make something out of it.

So I had 4 items of homework to do tonight, and I have finished 3 of them. I may still do the last one as well. We'll see.

Movie #19 Signs
This movie really hit with me. Sure the aliens were corny looking, but I was just blown away to discover that I wasn't watching an alien movie, I was watching a movie about everything happening for a purpose. The climax was very uplifting. Perhaps not as mind-blowing as the Sixth Sense or as artistic as Unbreakable for M. Night Shyamalan, but this is my favorite of his films to date. The story is heartfelt, intense, entertaining and moving.
